We believe quality childcare is more than about individual care, it must be all encompassing, and take into consideration parent support and the environment in which your child’s care is delivered. Sunhill has invested heavily in these areas; all of our nurseries have the additional support of individual managers solely responsible for nursery operations, customer support, quality assurance, and nursery facilities.

Central Support Services

Each of our nurseries is lead by an experienced, qualified, childcare professional. We understand that this role is critical to the experiences of your children in our hands and therefore we employ a dedicated Support Services Team to undertake many of the operational tasks involved in running a nursery so that your Nursery Manager can make the needs of your children and family their top priority.

Parent Liaison

The Team is overseen by our Operations Development Manager, who ensures that the monitoring, support and development opportunities provided to our Nursery Managers and staff teams keeps the delivery of high quality care and education at the forefront of our company ethos, whilst maintaining a strong focus on customer service and value for money.

Our Support Services Team is located in North Hertfordshire, with easy access to all of our sites, and operates from 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Fridays. The team comprises a Customer Services Team – trained to assist you with all your administrative queries from nursery fees, childcare vouchers and salary sacrifice schemes to Free Early Education Entitlement for 2, 3 and 4 year olds. They are also your first port of call to any of our other Support Services Departments.


To ensure we recruit and retain the best mix of professionals and trainee staff to care for your children, our HR Team offers support and guidance to our Nursery Managers on employment matters working directly with individual staff members, where appropriate, to improve performance and develop further skills.

Sunhill’s approach to quality

At Sunhill Daycare, we are committed to providing continuous high quality care and education. We promote interesting and challenging learning experiences through care, ensuring that all children form secure emotional attachments with key persons, and provide a base for children to develop their independence and exploration, whilst understanding how to manage risks and challenge. This ensures children are well prepared for the next stage in their learning. We aim to provide high quality education through varied and imaginative experiences for children, and involve parents with their child’s learning and development.

Ofsted inspections are usually only carried out once within a 47 month cycle. At Sunhill Daycare we provide more rigorous monitoring by employing a Quality Manager to provide monthly inspection visits at each nursery, using Ofsted guidance.

Our Quality Manager oversees care, compliance and education, providing advice, support, training and challenge to nursery managers and practitioners. Prearranged and unannounced visits take place at all nurseries monthly to ensure that all agreed company quality standards are maintained, adhering to the Early Years Foundation Stage and meeting standards set by Ofsted, including:

  • Children’s well-being, ensuring that strong care practices help children feel emotionally secure and physically and emotionally healthy.
  • Ensuring children’s needs are met through planning, observation and assessment, monitoring the impact that practitioners teaching has on children’s learning and development in all areas of learning
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of leadership and management within the setting, including staff training, mentoring, and identifying and driving plans for improvement.

Facilities Management

Whether an urgent maintenance requirement or legislation changes having in-house Facilities Management enables Sunhill Daycare to react quickly any situation. Sunhill nurseries are fully maintained by our Facilities Management department ensuring children, parents, staff, and visitors are in safe hands whilst on our premises. We operate several in-house managed maintenance procedures including:

Scheduled Maintenance

Servicing of equipment, PAT testing, Fire system & Gas safety certifications carried out by approved engineers.

Unplanned Maintenance

All the nurseries premises and equipment have an ongoing level of wear and tear which is reported back to facilities management who either rectify the problem or organise tradesmen to rectify dependant on the level of urgency and priority.

Planned Maintenance

Facilities management play a proactive roll in monitoring all areas of the nurseries on a regular basis both internally and externally to enable forward planning of future works and refurbishments.

Health & Safety

This area is taken very seriously within the company and facilities management are responsible for maintaining a safe environment. This may involve investigating issues of concern and implementing any changes or procedures that are required. This may include working in conjunction with Environmental Health, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and local Fire and Safety Authorities. CCTV is installed all Sunhill nurseries monitoring both internal and external children’s activity areas for the security of children, staff and parents.

Risk Assessments

Rigorous risk assessment procedures cover all areas of nursery operations; Sunhill’s continuous improvement philosophy ensures constant monitoring of areas affected by risk within individual nursery settings.

Environmental Health

Facilities management carry out continuous unscheduled inspections in all areas of the nurseries focusing on general cleanliness and hygiene, including in kitchens, WC’s and children’s nursery rooms.

Project Management

Facilities Management plays a key role in new projects from initial concept design to final fabrication using in-house AutoCAD drawing software. The work encompasses minor room layout changes to entire new nursery projects, for example our newly completed Royston nursery.
