Early Years Education

At Sunhill Daycare, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, which sets the standards for care, learning and development and for children from birth to five years, across seven areas of learning.

The Prime areas

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

The Specific areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

We focus strongly on the prime areas of learning with younger children, which ensures that all children have a strong foundation to develop skills for their future learning. We then introduce the specific areas of learning with our older children to help support and prepare them for the next stage in their learning. Our practitioners use Early Years Outcomes to inform their understanding of child development using typical behaviours of children at different ages.

Montessori in our nurseries

Sunhill is committed to further development of the Montessori approach to Early Years Education. Montessori recognised the child’s need for independence and for learning from real experiences of their environment in order to develop both physically and intellectually, using Montessori materials to gradually build the child’s knowledge and understanding through exploration, repetition and manipulation/discovery. We use the Montessori approach to compliment the EYFS within our Montessori nurseries.

Teaching and learning through care

At Sunhill, we understand that play is vital for children. It helps them to understand the diverse world around them and to develop socially, emotionally and become strong communicators. It is through play that our children learn and develop at their own pace and have fun with practitioners who understand, support and care about them.

We teach our children through a ‘learning through care’ approach, within a play-based curriculum, supporting all aspects of their learning and development helping them to enjoy and achieve.

We support children in developing secure attachments with practitioners and teach children through caring and meaningful relationships, exploring and extending their learning through play. We have high expectations of our children, and encourage them to become independent and confident learners, helping them to become emotionally well prepared for the next stage of their learning, and understand how to solve problems. It is through care and play that we help children to discover that learning is interesting and fun, leading children to become curious interested and keen learners.

The Curriculum at Sunhill

We believe that careful planning is required to ensure play and learning is of a high quality, reflecting each child’s individuality. Our planning starts with the key person observing children in order to understand and consider their current interests, next steps in their learning and development. Interesting and challenging but achievable indoor and outdoor activities are then planned and evaluated, with observations recorded in your child’s learning journey.

We ensure that you have regular contact about your child’s learning and development with us and you will receive a summative assessment on your child’s learning and development every three months, and a progress check at aged two, along with monthly activity sheets on what your child has been learning at nursery. We work in partnership with other settings, professionals, individuals and groups within the community to support children’s development and ensure all children are making good progress in their learning.
